Neither Migration Assistant nor Time Machine itself can see my backup, and the backup disc image doesn't want to mount. It is possible that installing all the various patches and service packs will fix this. I sure hope so. I will be extremely upset if I'm just, you know, fucked....

How can I "upgrade" my Mac PowerBook G4's OS 10.3.9 to at least a 10.4.9 in order to install MS Office Home & Student Edition? I had to replace my 5-6 year old hard drive and the laptop is now working well. The old hard drive had MS Office for Mac installed on it and the new one doesn'...

There are guided instructions on how to install OSX onto the current crop of netbooks. It breaks my heart because the PowerBook Duo line of notebooks actually defined the executive sub-notebook (they also defined the PDA/PIM with the Newton and dropped that ball, too), Why Apple must do a Netbook no...

So the Mac Store called, and as expected, the HD is toasted, unrecoverable. That set it close to the $350 flat rate anyway. So since that hit the flat rate they said it's much better to ship it off to Apple and let them fix everything including the case at that same flat rate. But then I got nervous...

So my Macbook just fell over ded. The HD is some variety of toast, I don't know what exactly but while Disk Repair (booted off CD-ROM) can see it, it can't touch it in any way. So, I'm kinda fucked on multiple levels, since this is also my recording machine. Anyway, this means you probably won't see...

Charles Moore wrote a great article about the unibody 13″ MacBook compared to the much-loved 12″ PowerBook. A friend of Charles argued that until the dimensions were nearly identical it could never be considered a replacement. Charles feels there’s a little more to it than that. I ...

This photo from a series Macs through the ages at Silicon.com is the first laptop produced by Apple in its PowerBook 100 series. This colorful seven pounder does not look all that different from today’s laptop, yet this picture was taken in 1991, nearly 20 years ago! The biggest tech differenc...

Tonight was a big night. My current primary personal computer is a 1.25GHz 15" PowerBook G4, with 2GB of RAM and an 80GB hard drive. I bought this at the end of 2003 shortly after this model was announced. When it came out, this computer was the first 15" aluminum PowerBook, a model that was long an...

So twenty-five years ago today, Apple released the Macintosh computer. And as far as I’m concerned, they changed the world. I was never an Apple II person, I was an Atari 800 guy. Then I used PCs for a while (DOS and Windows 3.1). For years I couldn’t understand why I should switch from ...

Apple PowerBook G4 (15-inch) laptop summary The good: Beautiful sleek-and-slender design; robust software package, including Mac OS X Tiger; illuminated keyboard and scrollable trackpad; SuperDrive DVD burner. The bad: Expensive; only 90 days of toll-free technical support. The bottom line: The high...
