I just finished making covers for a couple of old ratty quilts that belong to my sister's kids—basically, a bag with the quilt inserted and the end sewn up. I did sew all around the edges an inch or so in, so the quilt would stay put until they get them tufted. However—it's a good thing ...

(These are for the 52-Hats-This-Year Challenge on Ravelry. Numbers 1 and 2 are the Hat with Flower and the Baby Toboggan.) I made this one from the Ragg Yarn Watch Cap pattern by Marty Miller in Cool Crocheted Hats. However (there's always a however, isn't there?), I didn't like the way ...

My work is loving the world. Here the sunflowers, there the humming bird – equal seekers of sweetness. Here the quickening yeast; there the plums. Here the clam deep in the speckled sand. Are my boots old? Is my coat torn? Am I no longer young, and still not half perfect? Let me keep my mind on wh...

Well, we have survived the round of Christmas visiting, with only a mild cold (mine—thanks much, whoever had it previously) and an extra pound or to (mine also, alas). We gave nearly everyone gifts of bread and jam, which seemed to be much appreciated . . . my mother also received a persimmon pudd...

Ladies and gentlemen, we are in a very serious crisis in the world today. Never in our lives, or in the history of mankind, have we faced the problems we currently face. We have built a world that caters to the rich and material gain seems to be our only goal. Do we each need a house we can get lost...

I took these one morning a week or so ago; of course, now all the leaves are down and the light has changed as we move deeper into the cold (it was 18 the other night!). But it was a gorgeous autumn! We are slowly getting things done—it's been cold and damp this week and we're both moving ...

(Well, the next major one, anyway . . . ) This will be a sweater for John, which I shall probably finish about April if my past record is any indication. I'm using the Weekend Turtleneck pattern from Drew Emborsky's latest book, The Crochet Dude's Designs for Guys. The yarn is KnitPicks ...

(I admit, I've never gotten over growing up in South Carolina, where even a hint of snow was reason to let school out and rush to the grocery store . . . I still think snow is one of the neatest things that happens.) Anyway, we had some yesterday. It was only a light dusting, and it didn't l...

John drove me down to Concord, and we left the Charlotte airport early (as in, we had to get up at 4.30 early). We flew to Atlanta in a smallish, not-confidence-inspiring plane, and on to San Francisco in an Airbus. Much, much better—but I still find flying to be both profoundly unnatural and prof...
